A Bedford Mall Walking Program
Taking steps toward better health.
Everyone loves to walk! It's healthy! It's fun! And now you can enjoy your daily walk in the comfort and safety of the Bedford Mall ... all year long.
Don't forget these important components as part of a good exercise program:
- "Warm-up period." Warm-up consists of light physical activity that increases your body temperature to prepare for the more active part of your workout. A warm-up may consist of a slower-paced walk lasting for about five minutes.
- "Cool down period." End your exercise period by allowing your heart and lungs to slowly return to normal levels by walking slowly for five to ten minutes. It is always important to end exercise with stretching. Stretching is essential because it helps maintain or increase flexibility, which is important in preventing muscle strains, spasms, and soreness.
General Tips For Your Walking Program:
- Experts suggest that, at an early age, all people should try to accu
mulate at least 30 minutes of endurance-type physical activity, such as walking, every day of the week.
- Wear loose-fitting, layered clothing and comfortable shoes with good heel support.
- Do not exercise when you are feeling poorly.
- Remember, it is essential to drink water before, during, and after exercising.
A Consistent Walking Program Has Many Benefits:
Walking regularly three times per week for just 30 minutes can be one of the best things you do for yourself. The benefits are big!
Walking can:
- Improve blood circulation throughout your body. Help your lungs, heart and other organs and muscles work together more efficiently.
- Help you handle stress, relieve tension and sleep better.
- Increase your energy level.
- Assist you in losing and/or maintaining your weight when coupled with a healthy eating program.
